McDowell Memorial Studentships
Robert Brendan McDowell (1913-2011) was Professor of History at Trinity College Dublin. First appointed as lecturer in 1945, he worked at TCD until retirement and continued to reside on campus until he was 94. On his death in 2011, he left a generous bequest to the History Department, which has been used to fund postgraduate studentships.

One award will be made for a PhD student to start in either September 2024 or March 2025.

The awards are open to any student seeking to enrol on the PhD programme in History in either September 2024 or March 2025. Before submitting an application, the student must liaise with a potential supervisor in the History Department and begin the process of registering online for the PhD programme.

The award consists of full fees (EU or non-EU) and a stipend of €25,000 p.a. for four years.

Applications should consist of the following:

  • A brief cover letter confirming that you have discussed your project with a potential supervisor – 1 page maximum
  • An outline of the PhD proposal – 2 pages maximum
  • Details of other scholarships or funding you have applied for or have secured
  • A brief curriculum vitae – 1 page maximum
  • Two academic letters of reference. These may be the same letters submitted to Academic Registry for admission to the PhD.

Applications should be sent by email to the History Office (postgradhishum@tcd.ie) by 11.00am on 1 May 2024
